Welcome to the Badlands Spring Select Sheep Sale.
This year's spring sale features:
Yearling rams (all breeds); May-born yearling ewes from Coyote Acres & Sheep Trax; fall-born ram lambs and ewe lambs from Coyote Acres. (Fall-born Canadian Arcotts will sell in the August sale.)
Once again, we welcome back our guest Veteran Colony.
A word about reserves: we prefer to have the starting bid be our reserve. This way, there are no secrets. If the starting bid is $700, then that means if you bid, that animal will sell to the highest bidder.
We will be set up for cash, check, and e-transfer! Checks will be payable to Coyote Acres, e-transfers to coyoteacres@gmail.com with no security question required.
You can also contact us through our Facebook page.
*NOTE* Whether you are buying through an order buyer or online, please contact us for help arranging transport. coyoteacres@gmail.com or call/text 403-741-8597.
Though we have now opted out of doing a live sale, we appreciate the fact that many buyers prefer to see the animals before they buy, and are a little reluctant to purchase online just based on photos and videos. If for any reason you cannot bid online, or if you prefer not to bid online, you will have the option to have someone else place your bids for you. We look forward to putting these sheep on display for anyone who wishes to view before they bid, so please don’t be afraid to call us and arrange a pre-sale visit!
Consignors are also happy to keep their sheep home for buyers to pick up on-farm (please arrange pickup as quickly as possible after the sale). We will also hold animals until transport can be arranged. We will help with that any way we can, but please be aware that animals are left at the buyer's risk so if they will be left any length of time, you may wish to insure them!
**Please get in touch with Patric asap if you are any distance away. If there are enough sheep to make it feasible, we will look at a delivery run, and that takes time to prepare. It is a bit of a juggling act, but it can be done! We can potentially do a run to southern Alberta, northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, or even further afield if there are enough sheep to make it worthwhile.
Video links take you to Youtube videos.
Breeds are alphabetical: Canadian Arcott, Hampshire, Horned Dorset, Polled Dorset, Shropshire, Suffolk. The lots start with registered ewes, followed by rams.
Ewes are Lots 1-25, rams are Lots 26-48.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO BIRTH DATES! Some rams were born in Jan-Mar 2023, and the rest of these sheep are May and September born!

Female
Twin to Lot 2. This ewe is a granddaughter of one of the AI sires (foundation ram Canadian Arc 559X) and great-granddaighter of the other AI sire (first-generation ram Polycott 551Y). Going back to Genesis 927G means she also goes back to Sheep Trax Badger 83B, who was just an outstanding ram. Her grandmother Daisy 126D is another of those names that keeps popping up on pedigrees (in February of this year, at 8 years old, she had triplets). Can't go wrong with those ancestors. There is good length, growth, and size here. The sire is RR so she is at least QR.
This ewe, like all the ewes in the group, will be ready for breeding this summer and you can confidently put her with a ram for this coming winter lambing.

Wether lamb, dob April 17.
Twin to Lot 1. This ewe, like all the ewes in the group, will be ready for breeding this summer and you can confidently put her with a ram for this coming winter lambing.
***Special Note Regarding 283L! She had a lamb on April 17, 2024. This wether lamb will be weaning age June 16th. The ewe will sell with her lamb at foot, but we can also keep the ewe until mid-June, and buy the weaned lamb back (at current market price at that time). Note if you are relatively new to Canadian Arcotts, this lamb would be a great one to take home and ultimately put in your freezer. You will get great muscle and finish on a Canadian Arcott lamb, and he should be ready for butcher anywhere from 100 lbs to 125-130 lbs, depending on how big you like your cuts and how much fat cover you want.

The twin brother (Lot 27) to this ewe is also selling in the Badlands Spring Select. This ewe has excellent depth and thickness. Being a daughter of Harlie 91H means she is likely to be a big girl, long and well-muscled with great bone under her. She is also a potential accelerator, as her mother has previously lambed out of season. Harlie 91H's September 2022 daughter was the high-selling Canadian Arcott ewe in the 2023 Badlands Summer Select Sale.

This ewe has a really interesting pedigree. The old 117D ram was a triplet son of a Sawyer ram and out of a Zubot ewe. The dam's sire VCSF G782 was sired by my FCLB 43895C ram from Quebec and her dam was sired by my Pol 943G ram (who originally sold to Veteran Colony in the 2019 All Canada Classic). When animals worked for you, and you know they also worked for others, that is a mark of success!. This ewe is really thick and deep-bodied, and with those rams in her background she just can't disappoint.

Another one that is probably going to be a big girl. Her dam's mother, Chloe 535C, is a really big ewe. 535C is a twin out of Sawyer C 73R, who was 10 years old at the time, and raised the lambs just fine. She herself is now 9 and just had a strapping set of twin ram lambs. There is longevity here! And the 13H ewe is also a big bruiser of a girl, who lambed again in February this year with a ewe lamb that weighed 43 lbs at 36 days of age. 302L's sire 943G was such a phenomenal ram, I can't keep repeating myself about that ram. Size, growth, and longevity! Because of her sire I should probably be keeping her, but I am offering her in the sale.
This ewe, like all the ewes in the group, will be ready for breeding this summer and you can confidently put her with a ram for this coming winter lambing.

Clearly a lot of Justice 212J's lambs from May of 2023 made the cut. Going back to Polycott 551Y, Sheep Trax Daisy 126D, Sheep Trax Badger 83B, and Sheep Trax Alice 333A means that 212J had a lot of the odds stacked in his favor. Polly 222K is also a Polycott 551Y daughter, so this daughter is line bred to a first-generation ram. The grandmother Candy 945G is one of my favorite ewes, who has been to more than one show in her lifetime. The depth, the thickness, the bone, it's all here. Sire is RR so she is at least a QR.

If you like your pedigrees a little different, here is a ewe out of a GAVL ewe from Quebec. That ewe was finally culled just recently, at 8 years old; she had a good run here. She always produced good lambs, often had twins, and bred out of season. I loved her Germanie x Germanie pedigree. Sired by my favorite ram of all time, Sheep Trax Canon 233K, makes 324L a granddaughter of Clover 540C, a ewe that has never disappointed me. This ewe is long and deep, thick and correct.

Sheep Trax Clover 540C was 8 years old when she raised this ewe and her brother, and she just lambed again on May 10th at 9 years of age. And being a daughter of the 943G ram makes this ewe just that much more special. There will be no more daughters of that ram. There is longevity here, no doubt about it. Of course that doesn't matter to everyone, but if it matters to you, this one may be for you. The dam goes back to old Napkin Farm and Sawyer sheep, so that could appeal as well! No matter who I breed 540C to, she always produces good muscling and phenomenal length.
Lucia 326L is twin to Lot 31. She exhibits a lot of depth and thickness. Those who use Canadian Arcott rams but have never used the ewes before may be surprised at the muscling on these ewes, and despite all those terminal style traits they are phenomenal mothers and great milkers.
This ewe, like all the ewes in the group, will be ready for breeding this summer and you can confidently put her with a ram for this coming winter lambing.

I just can't keep them all, so some have to go. 317L's dam was the best ewe that we got from the Todd and Josee Lang flock. Unfortunately she got cast and we lost her. With both sides of the pedigree tracing to the old Poorton ram, 317L should be a producer. Sire is RR.

This is a May yearling that I really don't want to part with, but with having her dam and numerous females from the same maternal line, she is available. Tracing back to the 21E ewe , she should breed well out of season, accelerate well and just go about producing real good lambs. Sire is RR

This May born ewe lamb had a rough start with losing her mother shortly after she was born. She was raised on a foster dam, but got the short straw on the milk, as she could only nurse if the ewe's natural lamb was nursing. She came along very well after weaning. Descending from 162D, which I thought enough of to use for a new line in my Polled Dorsets, means she should work well accelerating and producing. A prospect that I really like. Sire is RR.

A fall born Poorton W124 grand-daughter, off a Trojan bred dam. The dam 940J has worked well accelerating and producing quality lambs. I have kept a full sister, who is working well. The 996G daughters just seem to rise to the top of the ewe lambs,.Hard not to like their length and muscling. Then you see how they produce. 996G has been my top sire for the last few years. A May yearling sired by 954J off a moderate framed Heeroma ewe, that traces back to some of their older lines. The combination of 954J on the Heeroma ewes, is one that just seems to work every time. 350L is a real nice fall ewe lamb sired by our flock sire 221K, a Tattykeel 80-97 son, who was our pick of that sire group. The dam of 350L is a moderate framed ewe with a tight udder, due to lamb May 2024. 147H is on our accelerated program, lambing every 8 months. Maternal grand-dam is about as close to my ideal Dorset ewe as I have raised, super long, well muscled in a moderate framed package. This one should be a top notch producer. Scrapie genotype is QR.

FEATURE !!!!! After much debate and looking at feed prices and lack of moisture, the decision has been made to offer 278L for sale. To my knowledge, this is the only daughter of Gweirglodd Gladiator registered in Canada. She is about as good a fit to my ideal size and type of Suffolk. She is moderate framed, long bodied and well muscled, yet she is still feminine. I am maintaining a very small select group of Suffolks and breeding AI to British semen or naturally breeding to rams that have a heavy British influence. It was not an easy decision to sell this one but it was made. Don't pass up this opportunity. I am not aware of any more Gladiator semen in Canada. Gladiator was a top show ram in the UK and has sired champions. Sire is RR.

This is a female, I just messed up her name when I was registering online. Here is the twin to 376L, once again sired by 260K, the British, Logiedurno Wildbill son. This fall born , twin ewe lamb is a long thick female with a moderate frame. She fits pretty well into what I am trying to create in my small Suffolk program. Her dam is lambing every 8 months and due again in May 2024. Although my Suffolk numbers are small, I think I have some pretty good ones, and this girl is no exception. Sire is RR.

My Feature Canadian Arcott Ram!
Single out of a yearling; birth weight 13.5 lbs.; 100 pounds at 83 days of age. Long, deep, thick, and grew like a weed. He is a big, impressive guy who really stands out. Scrapie genotype QR. The youngest ram lamb that made the cut, he rapidly became the biggest Canadian ram in the pen! He goes back to the Sawyer C 4Z ram, as well as both AI sires. Not a bad bunch of rams to have on your pedigree.
His dam is a daughter of the first-generation Polycott 551Y ram, and granddaughter of the foundation Canadian Arc 559X ram. These are the sheep that hit the reset button, back to the beginnings of the breed. This guy was younger than all the other rams selected last year, so instead of offering him for sale we simply left him to do his thing, in order to offer him in thiis year's Badlands Spring Select.

This twin ram has shown the phenomenal growth represented on both sides of his pedigree. His sire was a very well-muscled triplet (whose sister was probably the fastest-growing ewe lamb I have ever raised), and his dam is now quite possibly the largest Canadian Arcott ewe in the flock (and her mother was the largest ewe in the flock). If it matters to you, the pedigree is just a little bit different, with the Sawyer and Zubot breeding so close. Physically, he is a tank. There is a big British-style Suffolk ram lamb in the pen, and this guy is the same size. Just a big, growthy, thick, long and deep-bodied young fellow. Look for this powerful ram to mature into a big, strong animal with good bone and feet, in case he needs to travel on pasture, or walk on a concrete floor. Scrapie genotype QR. Twin to Lot 3.

Here is a ram for your consideration, especially if you don't have a problem with line breeding. This ram is line bred to just about the best ewe family you could ask for. Both sides go back to the old Sawyer C 104W ewe, and that was a ewe that could not put a foot wrong. The paternal grandmother Genesis 927G is a daughter of my beloved old Badger 83B, and the maternal grandmother 367A was Badger's half-sister- both out of 104W. I don't mean to repeat myself, but I will say it again- the animals that keep appearing on pedigrees are there because they worked, over and over again. This ram is smooth and long and has great bone. He is the one for those who like the color! Scrapie genotype is QR. .

Twin-born ram, lots of growth and muscle on this guy! If you want something unusual on a pedigree, his dam was AI-sired by the old Romance 170E ram, something you will not find anywhere else (we luckily stumbled upon the last two straws). And if you want something consistently good on a pedigree, well look no further than the sire Canon 233K. Not only is he out of Clover 540C (another one of those names that keeps popping up on pedigrees), but he is AI-sired by the foundation ram Canadian Arc 559X. Canon 233K was admittedly a single, but his dam raised him at the age of 7, and he was 115 pounds at 76 days of age. So if growth is what you are looking for, have a look at this guy. He is a strong, sturdy ram with loads of muscle and length. Scrapie genotype is QQ. .

Twin-born ram going back to just about every line I would pick if you asked me to create the ideal pedigree. Both AI sires, Canadian Arc 559X and Polycott 551Y, Clover 540C, and Delilah 192D who goes back to the Sawyer C 76X ewe family. I think a lot of breeders might be pleasantly surprised with how much of an outcross this ram could be for them. (Please use the Virtual Mating Tool on the CLRC website to check that out.)
Look for stretch and excellent bone on this ram. He has the wedge-shaped smooth shoulders that I specifically select for; I select against big, boxy shoulders. This is a breed that is easy fleshing and knows how to grow big lambs, so lambing ease is facilitated by smooth, wedge-shaped shoulders. The 233K sire is programmed for growth and gain. Luger 325L with the wool off.
I was on the fence about putting this ram in the Badlands Spring Select Sale, simply because the advanced age of his dam (she raised a set of twins at the age of 8, and I did not supplement them) meant that her lambs did not have explosive growth (and at 8, how could you fault her?). I reserved judgment until after he was shorn. (His twin sister is also in the sale, Lot 8.) After seeing him shorn, I have decided that absolutely, this ram will work for somebody! I feel he may produce more feminine daughters, but even when it comes to rams and market lambs, this guy could really surprise you. Knowing what both of his parents have produced in the past, watch for some pretty good genetics to get passed down. He has a lot of body, with length and thickness that he was really hiding under all that wool.
Pedigree-wise, he can't be beat. The Pol 943G ram sadly died in March of 2023 He was one of the best rams I ever raised. And at the risk of repeating myself, well Clover 540C is just one of those unicorn ewes.

Yes, there are a tiny handful of Coyote Acres Canadian Arcotts! This February-born ram lamb was kept to sell as a yearling.
An in-dam purchase from Don Johnston's Sky Blue flock, this ram is sired by a really good Sheep Trax ram and out of a ewe that goes back to a favorite old ram, Sheep Trax Angus 366A. Buying back from Don allows us to bring back in lines that are getting scarcer by the year. A little finer-boned, this ram is recommended for use on ewe lambs, and for creating those replacements! However the length, muscle, and thickness are still there.
Please note- though he looks black in the photos, he is actually an extremely dark brown.

A Poorton W124 grandson, out of an AI sired ewe. The dam is sired by Sandy Lane Trojan, a British ram. 31H has worked well on our accelerated lambing schedule. This ewe line tracing back through 495C has been a top line for years. The 996G sons are hard not to like, moderate framed, well muscled, long bodied rams. They often end up being the best in the ram pen. 357L is no different, we have been very hard on our Horned Dorset rams for awhile and if they make the cut, they have to be real good. 1/2 brothers have sold well accross Canada, with lots of positive fedback from buyers. A ram to buy with confidence. Sire is RR

Oz 200L is a combination of Australian, Canadian and British genetics. He is a thick yearling ram with real good length of loin. He has lots of breed character and stands on a good set of feet and legs. His dam is on our accelerated lambing program and lambed again in September of 2023. She is due to lamb again in May of 2024. This ram is dam has produced one of our best flock sires, a feature daughter (sold to South Dakota) as well as a number of rams sold to commercial flocks. This ram has a lot of potential to usefor either market lambs or quality replacements. Sire is RR.

Perhaps my favorite 241K son. Bred very similar to 380L but a little smaller framed. A real solid ram, packing on the muscle while still having enough stretch to be able to pack on the pounds. His dam has produced well on our accelerated program, raising a top flock sire, a feature ewe sold to South Dakota, a number of rams sold to commercial flocks and a 1/2 brother selling as our feature yearling ram, 200L. Sired by a 5/8 British ram, 380L is thick. He has a touch more frame than the other fall ram lambs, but is still not going to be a tall ram. His dam accelerated well and raisd some real nice lambs, with us retaining all of her daughters. Should work well producing market lambs and still give some nice daughters for replacements. We have been culling very hard in the Shropshires. This guy made the cut and has been grown out slowly for longevity. His dam has been lambing on our accelerated program, lambing every 8 months. She lambed again in January and is now just bred back for September. We get a few more singles doing this. The ewes in this pedigree have been very productive for us and accelerate well. He is a long and deep bodied ram with a great future ahead of him.

Here is a son of last year's high selling ram in our online spring sale. The sire 260K sold for $4200 to a flock in Oregon where they are happy with how he is working. 260K is British sired. The cross on the Mastine breeeding in the Ridge ewe has worked well. He shows the British influence with a more moderate frame. Sire is RR.

Another son of Rose Glen 260K, high selling ram from last years sale to Oregon. This ram shows his British influence with a moderate frame, good bone and muscling. Our rams have not been pushed and have been grown out for longevity. The dam is sired by Jacob 12J, who has lots of longevity on his dam's side. We have been accelerating our Suffolk ewes with them lambing every 8 months. By pedigree 295L is a RR.

Here is a fall born twin sired by 260K, last years $4200 sale topper. The dam is sired by a Quebec raised ram from the Maplestar flock and out of a ewe that has a strong British influence through the Trillium Woods flock. 233J is on our accccelerated program and is due to lamb in May 2024. This ram has had to fight for his feed as we run a large group of young rams that includes the fall born ones with the ones born the previous May, as well as a few from the previous January and February lambing. He is starting to come on more as he has gotten a little more growth. He shows his British heritage with moderation in the frame size. Sire was an RR
