The Smart Look
After leaving an inerasable mark on the cutting industry with incredible offspring earnings in excess of $1.7 million, The Smart Look was humanely euthanized the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 7. The 28-year-old mare owed the world nothing she gave her all as a broodmare and died as the No. 3 cutting producer of all time.
She had lived out her last few years under the watchful care of Jake James and Amy Carter at Ms. [Julie] Wrigleys ranch, said Justin High, DVM, who provided the mares veterinary care for the last few years. During this time, she was as healthy and strong as any horse on the place, especially for her age. Within the last few months, she began to suffer from complications of a small colon disorder, which despite the best care possible, was not something she would be able to overcome.
The Smart Look was bred by the legendary Bill Freeman, and purchased by George and Christine Stout before the first performance of her career. George Stout later debuted the mare in Fort Worth, Texas, at the 1991 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity, where they finished 21st in the Open finals. Over the next year, they finished 14th and 15th in the Non-Pro at the NCHA Super Stakes and NCHA Summer Spectacular, respectively.
After changing hands again, The Smart Look took to the weekend scene with new owner Thomas Wiens, of Sedalia, Colorado. The mare continued to show in Non-Pro and Amateur classes until her retirement in 1999, when she left the performance arena with $48,723 to her credit. At that juncture, she was already well on her way to making a name for herself as a broodmare.
In that same year, The Smart Look produced a son by High Brow Cat that went on to become one of her highest earners of all time. That foal was 2005 NCHA Open World Finals Show Champion WR This Cats Smart, who garnered $236,474 as a cutter and has since achieved Equi-Stat Elite $7 Million Sire status. But even before WR This Cats Smart made a name for himself, The Smart Looks first foal was thickening her bankroll.
Smart Lookin Hi Brow (by High Brow Hickory), bred by Wiens Ranch Company Inc., earned $221,929 in the cutting pen. Among the mares accolades are Derby Open championships from the 1999 Abilene Spectacular and NCHA Summer Spectacular, and Classic/Challenge Open titles from the 2000 Augusta Futurity and 2001 Polo Ranch Classic. To date, her offspring earnings total approximately $275,000, according to Equi-Stat.

Shining Spark is an NRCHA $4 Million Dollar Sire
From 2006 The NRCHAs second Million Dollar Sire, Shining Spark, reached million dollar status in 2004. He made headlines when he won the AQHA Junior Reining World Championship in 1993 and the NRHA Open Derby Championship in 1994 but that was only the beginning of his legendary autobiography. This high-caliber athlete, having marked a 230.5 to win his NRHA Derby title, has been known to sire extremely talented performers. His offspring dominate both reining and reined cow horse competition, but they also take the spotlight in roping events.
At the 2005 AQHA World Show alone, his offspring picked up four World Championships including: Junior Working Cow Horse Champion Shiners Smart Chex, Junior Heeling Champion Shyna Spark, Amateur Working Cow Horse Champion Shine Smartly and Amateur Heading Champion Bald N Shiney. Bald N Shiney also carried C.J. Murphy to win the AQHAs All-Around Amateur title.
Shining Spark is the NRHAs youngest Two Million Dollar Sire and consistently ranks among the AQHAs Leading Sires of Performance Point Earners. Born and raised at Carol Rose Quarter Horses, Shining Spark was sired by Carols great stallion Genuine Doc and out of the amazing mare, Diamonds Sparkle.
From 2021 For 17 years, Shining Spark reigned as the king of cow horse sires. He reached all-time leading sire status first in 2003, and remained at the top until September of this year. He was the first sire to reach Three Million Dollar Sire status in the NRCHA and is the Number One Maternal Grandsire of Cow Horse Money Earners, according to Equi-Stat records. His highest money-earning offspring in the NRCHA is Smart Shinetta (out of Smart Hickory by Docs Hickory), a 2002 mare with $128,169.92 in the books.

With very limited showing, this incredible horse was 4th in the Nation in Novice Horse Open when I bought him as a coming 5 year old. He was the favorite at the Congress as a 3 year old, but lucky for me, the trainer put him off pattern....lucky because he probably would have been sold to someone else. Out of the hundreds of stopping pictures of Bubba, there isn't one that his ears are not pricked straight forward, he is just so pleased to be doing his job.
Once in a very long while, a horse comes along that exemplifies the desired characteristics of his breed. Chics in the Male is such an individual. A huge kind eye set in a wide, intelligent forehead forecasts his exceptional disposition and learning ability. Exemplary conformation that won him 6 grand champion bronzes in Amateur halter over much larger, heavier muscled types at the Canadian National Championships and a flowing stride ...it's not surprising that although at 10 years of age he is past his prime as a reiner, I still want to take him out and show him off.
Last year we won the NRHA NonPro Bronze at Red Deer with a 73 1/2 with just 3 days riding after breeding season. And even more amazing, while I was running my mare in the same class, he skinned off his halter, and came sauntering up to the rail to watch, through about 25 milling horses without making a peep! Easy to live with, easy to look at, this wonderful stallion is passing all of his best attributes on to his progeny. I feel privileged to have such a horse share my time and space. Although we knew that after 20 years of producing genetically exceptional offspring CHICS IN THE MALE had no problems with genetic disease, we had him tested. The results were as expected, absolutely N/N on all 5 test panels.
