Mustang SallyFebruary 25, 2007 Mustang Sally was brought to her new home after spending three months at the Bear Valley Rescue Centre.  WHOAS had received an email back in November about a four year old Alberta mustang mare that needed to adopted out to a new home.  Sally had been captured as a yearling from the foothills near Sundre and sold to a gentleman who found himself in a position of being unable to take her with him when he moved.  He was afraid that if she went to the auction she would surely go for slaughter.  For the past three years Sally had lived comfortably and quietly in a very large pasture with other domestic horses but had not been handled or halter trained.  Sally was brought to the rescue centre a week after we received the emailed request for help.  WHOAS arranged and assisted in moving Sally to the Centre where she has since waited for a suitable adoption placement to be found.  Today a man’s dream came true by adopting Sally and bringing her home to her new location.  This fellow is a WHOAS member and a very experienced horseman and farrier, and has worked with all kinds of horses for over thirty years.  He is looking forward to working with  Mustang Sally who’s intelligence seems to surpass most of her domestic pasture mates.  Adoptable 1This afternoon while he got the mare settled in her barn stall, Bob and I were thrilled to discover four mustang colts that had been rescued by the people who own the horse boarding ranch.  The only other bidder at the auction was the meat buyer on these four little angels.   The little fellows were extremely thin, dehydrated and in need of lots of TLC.  In the past two weeks these colts have been halter trained, dewormed, had their hooves trimmed and supplied with excellent feed and care.  The owners of the colts will adopt them out in a few weeks after having received further training & handling and when their health is completely restored.  The foals are still a bit shy of strangers but have come along way in a short period of time.  Two little bay colored colts are named Reno and Rascal and are likely 1/2 brothers.  Anyone interested in adopting any of these four little fellows can contact bob1603@telusplanet.net We would like a brief description of your experience and training of horses, the type of facilities you would provide, along with pictures of it and why you think you would make a suitable candidate to take on a mustang.  Name, address and phone number should be included as well.  All candidates will be screened.  The price for one of these foals is $650 which does not include transporting.  The owners of these beautiful colts naturally have the final say as to whom the foals will go.  They have spent a lot of time in caring for and training these wee ones.  WHOAS is merely offering advertising and assistance in screening of possible adopters.  There will soon be other adoptions advertised on our website of other displaced adult mustangs and foals in need of new homes.  Pictures of the four colts will be posted shortly. My name is Carrie Johnson and I am the General Leader of the Sunset Riders Light Horse 4-H Club in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

My Dad is Bob Henderson President of WHOAS. I am very proud of the work that Him & Doreen & WHOAS are doing for these awesome animals.

My 4-H Club is having a fundraiser, and instead of doing steak & pasta nights we have decided to do something a little different. Bob & Doreen have offered to come to Moose Jaw to do a presentation on the wild horses.

Date: April 21, 2007
Time: 2:30pm & 6:00pm
Place: Lindale School Gym
1322 11th ave N.W.
Moose Jaw, Sk.

Admission is Adults $4.00
Kids 10 & under $2.00

Please purchase tickets in Advance.

Extra tickets MAY be avaliable at the door.

There will be about a 45 min presentation given by Bob Henderson with a chance to ask any questions after. We are having a Silent Auction & Penny Parade. There will also be pictures of the wild horses for sale.

The fundraiser is for my 4-H club and thought that it would be an awesome way to let more people learn about the wild horses & WHOAS. All money generated will be used for our 4-H club which will then make a donation to WHOAS.

If you would like tickets to the presentation, would like to donate an item for the auction or penny parade, make a donation or need more info please contact me at sunsetriders4hclub@sasktel.net or (306)630-7569

Hi Meikabella;

Leasing a horse would be your best option if you cannot afford to buy one. You can lease a well trained horse at almost any horse boarding facility. That way you would save money on feed, vet bills, medications, riding equipment and other hidden costs associated with owning a horse. You could just pay the leasing fee and enjoy the ride.

So glad to read up,that so many people want to give a helping hand to find this jerk,who is getting turned on in killing these magnificent and beautiful wild horses in Alberta, I agree he is very much of a coward, will wish and pray that he is caught,and charged or fined heavily .

You are so lucky to have sally shes very pretty..I think it is very sad that ppl just go out and shoot these wild friends of ours.This must be put to an end Wild horses diserve to live there lives And to be wild and free instead of being shot its not right

Carrie, would have loved to have been at the presentations…that is a horrible day for me unfortunately as I have two other things at the exact same times as those….you should advertise this at the Golden Mile Arena if you are not doing that already. I am sure people at my riding club would be very interested in this. Let me know if I can copy and paste this onto our website…

You can email me at sunsetriders4hclub@sasktel.net

carrie. i would like a copy of your poster.if it is ok with you i will photo copy them and hang them up where ever i go.( kenmcleodw@hotmail.com) i am also making a poster to advertise my movie that will be out soon.my life with wild horses.

I haven’t been to the barns in awhile. I will make sure the poster is still up in our barn. We use the Jack Duncan arena barn for our riding club. Our coach just bought a horse to save her from the meat market. I am just heading up there now to check her out. If the poster disappeared from that barn, I will find out why. Keep at it!!

Thank you to all who inquired about the adorable colts. As of today, April 15, 2007 they have all gone to new homes.

Hi i was just wondering if you can help me find information on a horse I bought from someone who said they have bought him from the Alberta rescue society. The name of my horses is Dude and he is a quarter horse and we believe he is also part Mustang he is turn 5. The color of him is dune he has a racing strip three white stocking a white blaze and a few other little markings. He also has a short main and tail…thanks hope you can help me out to finding more out about his papers and which mare he foaled to etc.
Tammy

Hi there Tammy;

Who is to know the bloodlines of a horse that winds up at a rescue centre. They usually are rescued from feed lots and the auction. If you didn’t get papers with Dude there likely aren’t any. However you could look on line to the various Alberta Equine Rescue Centres and write to them to find out if they happened to have this particular horse at one time. Also the Quarter Horse does have mustang in its bloodlines. The breed was developed from several different breeds initially. Hope that helps, Doreen.

howdy, i was wondering if there was a mustang
rescue center near Edmonton thats in need for some
help. Im deeply taken in by these horses and wish to own one some day. But first i would like to be around them. i own a 3 year old right now, and have alot of horse experience.
Rocketgurl_horse_luver@hotmail.com please email
if you have info. Thanks.

Hi Braidy;

There is the Wild Rose Equine Rescue Centre near Edmonton that probably would love some help. There are probably more than that one but is the one I know of personally. Hope that helps. Doreen

DNA results Research shows…Dales a hardy English pony mixed breeds..Various colors. Fells English…Bred for harsh conditions..Shire..England had a big hand in breeding

A bit more on Peace River area horses..North of Hines Creek…Whitemud area.Typical type..Northeast some showed Appaloosa charistics which sometimes shows for generations,well liked by riders as most of them showed great endurance. Regardless they were referred to as a cayuse.

Doreen…Re Branded vs slicks..I am sure you and I will never be on the same side of the fence regarding this subject.In life personal opinions are valued and entitled to..My main argument is (been there done that). Your main argument seems to be no brands showing in photos..The majority of photos on your page are head on..Your photos seem to be taken thru a vehicle window…Likely after the save the wild horse program was started, by which all branded stock had likely died..Unless a brand on a horse was zeroed in on it would probably not be visible..Freeze branding was not used then.In summer only, when a horse is shed off are brands readable at more than a few feet away..I have many pictures of riders on horses I know was branded and yet no brands are visible..At horse sales many brand inspectors still clip a lot of horses..I also wonder how many of your readers know how cruel nature is to the bush grass horse vs short grass horses.The survival rare differs greatly..Altho our opinions differ I support your sticking to your guns and your effort…No capture of horses in/08…Will leave more mares to increase herd size but will also leave more bachelor studs who do not reproduce..I think a stop on mare capture ok Bachelor studs can be captured with no hassle to mares and foals…

vegreville 4h can find very cheap horses and is always looking for new members our 4h donated$100 to these rescued horses we got to brush them and in 6 months they will be up for adoption!

Something to say?
