Raised to be Horses

After a year in the Westwind Ranch Colt Resort Program young horses are expected to:
- be caught in a field and lead home unaccompanied, without treats or bribes;
- walk and jog circles on the lunge line, in hand and in frame;
- stand tied;
- calmly spend the night in a box stall;
- load in a stock trailer;
- stand politely for farrier work;
- think for themselves, find the best grass, the driest spot and choose their friends;
- stay out of the way of bigger guys and middle aged saddle horses;
- be friendly, mannerly little horses.
In short, understand everything necessary to be welcome in any trainer’s program, for any discipline.

While there are many forms of ‘Natural Horsemanship’ promoted today, the principles we have learned from Chris Irwin, besides making perfect sense, put horses in the best frame of mind to reach their potential.

‘Being the Better Horse’ is never truer than working with these youngsters. Uncompromising tough love is allowing us to turn out yearlings and two year olds who are mannerly, calm and free moving. Come visit and see for yourself.
