Futurity Information

  1. This is one (1) event, consisting of three (3) equal divisions in which points are totaled and averaged to determine a winner. There will be two (2) go rounds.
  2. There will be two (2) judges for each go round. A tiebreaker judge will be designated prior to the event.
  3. There are three (3) levels of participation as follows: youth, amateur, and open. Note that all levels of participation will compete together, with announcements of the top placing youth, amateur and open contestant.
  4. The order of “go” will be determined by draw, one (1) hour before each go-round begins.
  5. In the event that a large number of entries necessitate rotating horses through the arena, a minimum of six (6) entries will remain in the arena at all times during the entire go-round. Tack and equipment changes will be made in the arena.
  6. Same contestant must exhibit or compete in both go rounds and all divisions. ONE HORSE-ONE RIDER.
  7. The winner of the Futurity will be the horse receiving the most points overall from the three (3) divisions in the two (2) go-rounds.
  8. Horses placing in the top ten in each class will be given one (1) point plus an additional point for each horse placing below them, not to exceed ten (10) points for first place. Points are calculated on ten placings only.
  9. In the case of any ties, points will be equally split.
  10. Horse must show in all divisions of all go rounds to receive prize money or an award.
  11. The top ten finishers of the Futurity must be available for presentations and pictures in the sale ring immediately prior to the start of the sale.

Conformation Division

Emphasis to be placed on an individual that is conformationally correct and sound on all feet and legs. Balance, breed type, form to function, smoothness of body parts, eye appeal and the appearance of an athletic individual all to be considered.

Rail Division

Designed to show a free, easy moving individual that is relaxed, with alert ears, moving balanced with a non-intimidated, forward way of going, and bright and responsive to the rider at various gaits. When asked to extend the jog or lope, the horse should move out with the same smooth, natural way of going. Rail work, in both directions of the ring, will consist of walking, jogging and loping with the extension of the jog and possibly the lope. To be shown on a reasonably loose rein or light contact without undue restraint. Judging will be based on the horses’ overall performance and way of going as well as its ability to hold the designated gait and correct leads. Horses by be asked to back.

Pattern Division

Will consist of an individual pattern or work, designed to show how well broke the horse is. Work will consist of a simple pattern designed for a two year old. (See Futurity Pattern Score Sheet). The pattern class will be judged using scribes to mark the scores as indicated on the Futurity Pattern Score Sheet.

Equipment

  1. All horses are to be shown in a standard headstall (brow brand, shaped or split ear).
  2. All horses are to be shown in western equipment and attire.
  3. All horses to be shown in a bosal or snaffle bit that meets NSBA rules, 3/8” bit measurement with a ring size of not less than two (2) inches and no more than four (4) inches.
  4. All equipment and bits will be checked by an equipment judge.
  5. Training devices – anything other than the legal snaffle or bosal as stated above are PROHIBITED in the show arena and designated warm up arena at all times.
  6. All tack changes will be made in the arena with the assistance of no more than two (2) helpers.
  7. Split or tied reins may be used; however, all horses are to be shown with both hands on the reins.
  8. Horses with false or deadened tails or illegal or inhumane equipment in the show arena will be eliminated from the competition. Hair to hair extensions are permitted in the futurity. Every horse in the futurity must have natural tail function.
  9. Beginning in 1999, any horse believed not to have a natural tail function will be inspected by two (2) veterinarians. If both veterinarians agree that the horse does not have natural tail function, it will be excluded from the futurity.
  10. 10. Horses and equipment are subject to examination by the Steward, show management and/or judges in the show arena and designated warm-up arenas at all times.

All competitors will be issued one (1) warning if they are caught in an equipment violation. The warning may be issued by any member of the Alberta 50/50 Horse Association. Further equipment violations will be grounds for elimination from the futurity, subject to the discretion of the directors.
